Grow our urban canopy for all residents!
Tree Equity is the concept that access to trees should be equitably distributed. In 2020, Hamilton’s total canopy coverage in its urban area was estimated at approximately 21.2%.
The City of Hamilton has a goal to increase canopy coverage to 40%. However, in some areas of the city, residents do not have access to trees. In fact, Ward 8 has the lowest percent of canopy coverage at 7.6%.
Green Venture is working with municipal and organizational partners to add more trees, especially in areas that have a high need. Over the years, Green Venture has worked with CityHousing Hamilton, schools, churches, and other organizations to compile a database of trees and plant more trees.
The Hamilton Tree Equity Project aims to improve urban forest health and tree equitable distribution across the city. Check out our Tree Equity Project report to see where we conducted our inventories with the help of our amazing volunteers.
